Our story begins way back on November 13th 1946, in East Rushton Mike Tagg (Mr Shoes) was born. Growing up on a farm with his sister Mary. Starting work at a tender age, helping their parents on the farm, Mike and Mary began working many hours to help bring in the next penny. (Character building as Mike refers to it)
Mike attended Thorpe Grammer School and began running...
Watching his older sister train in Norwich Mike soon realised that this was something he could do, and do well!
Qualifying for the English Schools Cross Country in Peterborough.
"That was the day that I realised I was the BEST in England because I had only qualified as the 8th athlete for Norfolk and only just made the team"
As a junior on the track in 1965 he ran 4:07 seconds for the mile at the Inter-Counties, on cinders at the White City. That was the seventh fastest in the World by a junior that year and third fastest ever by a British junior at the time.
Mike went on to win The Junior National of 1966. Beating Dave Atkins in Yorkshire. "I only learnt years later that Dave Atkin was the favourite to win, there were a few bookies on the course and my dad got 'odds' on me at 5 to 1. We were not that wealthy but he had £5 on me. Which paid off!"
Going on to win The International (World) Junior Championships in 1966, defending National title the year after. And then the senior International 'World' Championships in Vichy in 1970.
Mike and his sister Mary ran for Great Britain in the Olympics of 1968 in Mexico City. To add to the family pattern Mike's son Neil showed great promise as a miler before he even went to Primary School. Mike's eldest son John as a young man was a committed club runner and footballer.
Mike Tagg was never beaten as a senior over 10 miles on the road in the UK. Mike came second in the European Games 10,000 in Athens in 1969. He ran his fastest 10K on the track in Helsinki in 1971 with a time 28:14.65 and PB of 13:41.4 that year for 5K in Munich.
Mike Tagg ran for 20 years, missing hardly any training over that period running 100 miles a week.
Mike taught for a short time at Thetford before going to University.
After University in 1971 Mike, concentrated year on year more on his career outside of running. After Leaving Reading and his Loughborough course. Mike went on to work for Adidas and eventually became Managing Director of Nike UK. Bringing the brand to the UK and taking the sales from £0.
Mike Tagg left Nike after starting a family and deciding that he wanted to be home more. He went on to begin his own company Mr Shoes in 1978 with his wife Chris whom he married 01/11/1969. Mr Shoes is and still remains a family business with Mike Managing Director and his two sons working within the business.
"If I had my time again I would do less mileage and more quality. There is no substitute for Quality. If you want to run fast you have got to train fast." Mike Tagg
