Toms
“We mould beautifully to your
feet!” they scream from the shoe rack. “We’re heavenly, slipper-like, perfect
for a sunshine-filled day... why not try a pair of us on?” Before you know it,
you’re walking over to the tills to pay. Toms can be very persuasive, you know.
A comfortable take on the
espadrille, Toms come in a variety of flattering colours: khaki, navy, cream,
red and black. Also available are the forever lovable nautical stripes,
corduroy-esque numbers and, to cater for the girly girls out there, you can
even get a sequin pair or a Toms wedge.
While you may think you’re doing
your feet the world of good (which you certainly are) the brand is a do-gooder
in itself. Toms were established in 2006 by American traveller Blake Mycoskie
who visited children in Argentina and found them to have no footwear to speak
of, which is not only a major cause of disease but prohibits them from
attending school too. Blake came up with the ‘One for One Movement’: he would
match every pair of Toms shoes purchased and give them to a child in Argentina.
Since then, over 1,000,000 pairs of
shoes have been donated to children all around the world. Let’s see if we can
make it even better?
